Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste is a long, quiet gray-sand beach just north of Playas del Coco, and it is not the beach of the same name near Jacó on the Central Pacific coast. It suits couples and families who want peace, gentle water and palm shade, with Coco's services nearby.

Who it suits

Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste gets far fewer visitors than its busy neighbor, so it draws people looking for peace and quiet. The light gray sand has only a few stones. You can swim in gentle waves, take a long walk, or lie under the palm trees that shade the edge of the beach.

That makes it a good match for couples, families with young swimmers, and anyone who wants a slower pace. Divers like it too. Coco and Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste suit beginner divers, and dive operators work from both.

If you want a lively town with lots of restaurants, base yourself in Playas del Coco, to the south, and come here for the day.

Getting there

Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste sits north of Playas del Coco, between Coco and Playa Panamá. The beach is reachable all year. Guanacaste Airport (LIR) is inland to the northeast.

Shuttle companies list about 25 minutes to an hour for a private transfer from LIR to Coco, depending on traffic and drop-off point. Read about getting there from Liberia airport, including driving and bus options.

What to do

Beach days. The blue-green water and coastal trees make this a good place to swim in gentle waves, read and walk.

On the water. Fishing, boat rides and water skiing are all part of the local offer. Dive trips also leave from this side of the bay.

Bat Islands trips. Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste is one of the usual starting points for boats to the Bat Islands (Islas Murciélago). That protected marine sector is managed by the Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG), which sets entry rules for boats.

Next beach over. Playa Panamá, to the north, has a wide, low-swell bay and a small mangrove.

Slow mornings. Bring a book and a towel, and find a patch of palm shade before the day heats up.

Practical notes

The north end can get strong waves, mainly in the rainy season, so swim with care there.

The beach is long, so bring water and shade for a full day. Coco, just to the south, has a wide range of services for errands.

When you search maps or book transfers, type "Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste" so you land on the right coast.

Pack snacks and drinks if you plan to stay all day.

Sea and beach conditions change, so check current conditions locally before you swim.
