This guide helps you pick a base around Playas del Coco and the Gulf of Papagayo. It suits couples, families, divers and first-time visitors who want to match a beach area to their travel style. Each area below covers the setting, who it fits, beach access and the stay styles you'll find.
From Coco you can easily reach Ocotal, Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste and Playa Panamá. Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste is not the beach of the same name near Jacó on the Central Pacific coast, so match the region and the map when you book. The Papagayo Peninsula and its marina are a few kilometers away.
How to compare areas
Use the same four questions for every area:
- Location: How far is it from Coco's restaurants, shops and boat departures?
- Setting: Is it a town, a small cove or a resort zone?
- Who it fits: Does it match how you like to spend your days?
- Beach access: Can you walk to the sand, or will you drive, climb stairs or take a boat?
A quick tip on labels: "Near the beach" here means within about 300 meters of the sand. It does not mean the room sits on the beach itself, so confirm the exact spot on a map before you book.
Each area below is named for its main beach. Coco, Ocotal, Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste and Playa Panamá all belong to the Sardinal district of Carrillo canton. The Papagayo Peninsula, across Culebra Bay, belongs to the Nacascolo district of Liberia canton.
Playas del Coco
Setting: This area covers the town of El Coco and the long beach around its bay. Near the sand you'll find small hotels and hostels, restaurants, tour agencies and transport services.
Who it fits: Pick Coco if you want dinner options on foot, plenty of tour departures and a town feel. The center is easy to get around on foot, which helps if you don't rent a car.
Beach access: The town sits on a long, sheltered bay with grayish sand. Many mapped hotels and apartments sit within 300 meters of the beach.
Stay styles: In town, Near the beach, and Condo or vacation rental. Apartments and homes listed on booking platforms are part of the local mix.
Traffic often backs up near the beach, so ask whether your stay has parking if you're driving. Our Playas del Coco beach and town guide has more on the layout.
To compare current options in town, you can browse a list of Playas del Coco stays on Guanacaste Tour.
Ocotal
Setting: This area covers Playa Ocotal and the small coves just west of it, in the Ocotal community southwest of Coco. The beach sits on an inlet bounded by hills, and the high ground around it looks out over the Gulf of Papagayo.
Who it fits: Ocotal suits couples and divers who want a quieter cove with Coco right next door.
Beach access: The beach is small, with low waves. If you pick a stay on the hill, ask how you reach the sand.
Stay styles: Hillside with views, Near the beach, and Condo or vacation rental. The Playa Ocotal guide covers the cove in more detail.
Bahia Pez Vela Resort
Partner stay: a private complex of villas and studios on its own small beach just west of Playa Ocotal. Its villas sit a short walk from the sand, and many have full kitchens.

Staying a few weeks
A condo or vacation rental with a kitchen makes weeks easier. Look for a washing machine, a desk if you work online, and a short walk to groceries. Read more about planning a longer stay.
Before you book
Ask a few practical questions before you pay. Is there air conditioning in the bedrooms? How long is the walk to the beach, and is it on a road or a path? Is there parking, and is the drive in steep? For rentals, ask what happens during water cuts and whether the home has a storage tank.
Pick your area first, then compare airport transfer times by area so your arrival day stays easy.
Rules, access and services change, so check current conditions with your host before you travel.
